Kamiliah Singleton Mass Media and Children Weekly Response Due: 12/1/09 TV: Is it Really the Blame How many children do you have? “I have one child, a son his name Jayden.” How old is he? “He is 6 years old.” How much TV would say you Jayden watches? “He loves TV I would say that he watch 30-35 hours a week, that’s all he seem to want to do.” Does he ever act out what he sees on TV? “Yes he does that often, I tell him that what he see’s on TV is not real, we have that discussion all the time” Is he aggressive to other children while playing? “Sometimes I find that he is, Jayden is a great kid does well in school, but sometimes he does get carried away with his friends and cousins.” What do you mean by carried away? “ You know he may be hit or say something inapporate that say something he learned or TV, he is not only one though I noticed my nephews some of his friends do the same thing. Do you think that TV desensitizes children? “Yes, something I find that when Jayden hurts someone by an accident I feel like I have to make him apologize, it’s like he doesn’t believe they are hurt.” Do you think that TV creates stereotypes? “Absolutely, just the other day Jayden and I were in line at the market and he asked me if the Muslim family behind us were going to blow up the store, he never talk about that he clearly learned that at school” Is there any kind of shows or movie Jayden is forbidden to watch? “Yes he is not allowed watch horror films, the main reason is because it frightens him too much if he sneaks a peek then he is up all night or sleeping with me” Who do you think is responsible for the message that children receive from television? “Some my just blame it on the parents, but I don’t agree I am a single mother and I do the best I can with my son. I work two jobs and don’t always know for sure what he has seen, I do encourage him to ask questions, I try to monitor what he watches when I am home. I set rules as to what he can, but doesn’t always work. I believe that collectively it’s the parents, teachers (they are with my son 6 ½ 7 hours a day), broadcast companies, and even the government. If we want our children (our future)to grow up and become honorable human beings it takes everyone of us.
